The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL challenging the appointment of Lt Gen Bikram Singh as the next Army Chief but made it clear that its order would not affect any pending proceedings against him in cases including an alleged encounter in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pushed on the backfoot, the government on Friday told the Supreme Court that it has withdrawn its December 30 order rejecting Army Chief General V.K Singh’s statutory complaint for treating his date of birth as May 10, 1951 instead of May 10, 1950.
The government’s decision to rescind the order came against the backdrop of the Apex Court stating that its December 30 order was vitiated and would be quashed if this was not done.

The Supreme Court on Friday took the Union government to task over the issue of age of the Chief of the Army Staff, Gen. V.K. Singh, saying the government decision-making process went against the principles of natural justice and the Constitution.

Four Army personnel were killed in a Dhruv helicopter crash in north Sikkim near the Sino-India border, days after a Pawan Hans chopper went down in the northeast claiming 17 lives.

An Army helicopter, with two pilots and two soldiers, on Thursday went missing while flying over north Sikkim, triggering concerns over the fate of the chopper and the personnel.
The Advance Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv of the Army Aviation Corps had taken off from Sewak Road Base in Siliguri at 10.30 a.m., Army sources said.
It lost radio contact at around 11.30 a.m., the sources said adding efforts are on to locate it.
